How can I become a volunteer firefighter with Silver City VFD?

How much does it cost if the fire department responds to my home or property?

The Silver City Fire Department is organized under Title 18 of the Oklahoma Statutes.  SCVFD is certified through the Forestry Division of the State Department of Agriculture, and its personnel are agents of the State of Oklahoma when responding to emergencies.

SCVFD is overseen at the State level by the Forestry Division through a Rural Fire Coordinator of our sub-state planning district, Central Oklahoma Economic Development District (COEDD).  SCVFD is periodically audited by this office in order to verify our compliance with minimum requirements.

Locally, SCVFD is governed by a Board of Directors which is elected by members in good standing (subscribers) of the fire district.  Board members must be residents of the fire district and candidates are nominated at the September regular meeting.  The Board election is held at the Annual Meeting each October.  There are five Board members, and each serves a five-year term, so Director is elected each year.  The Board determines broad policy, approves all firefighters, appoints the Fire Chief, and is responsible for fire department finances.

The Fire Chief is the executive officer of the fire department, and is responsible for all official activities of the fire department.  The Fire Chief determines narrow policy, and at his sole discretion appoints the Assistant Fire Chief and any other officers from among the roster of volunteers.  The Fire Chief also serves as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.

The boundaries of the Silver City Fire District are determined by the Creek County Commissioners.

SCVFD is charged by the State of Oklahoma with the responsibility to respond to and bring under control all uncontrolled fires within the boundaries of the fire district, and to respond upon request with available resources anywhere in the State of Oklahoma.

SCVFD is also a certified EMS First Response Agency.  The authority for this aspect of our public service is the State Department of Health.
