The Original Brush 1

Here is our first truck, a 1974 4X4 International 200 3/4 ton pickup. We unimaginatively christened this truck "Brush 1".

This shot was taken before we did anything to the truck. We received this truck from Forestry when another fire department turned it back in because they had received a better truck.

We originally rigged this truck with a 275 gallon tank and 2-inch 90 GPM military fuel transfer pump. 80' of booster hose is on a spring-loaded reel mounted on the back.

You will note that we only filled the tank to the 200-gallon mark, and yet the truck still looks a little light on the front. 200 gallons of water weighs precisely 1,660 pounds. This tank is really too big for this truck, but we used what we had at the time, okay?

Okay.

Better than nothing, as we proved on many occasions.

This was the final version of Brush 1 as of June, 1999. We replaced the engine (don't ask), and stripped everything that we started with out of the bed. We installed a skid unit consisting of a 200-gallon lower-profile tank, a Honda 5.5HP 2-inch high pressure pump, and an electric rewind hose reel. We also installed a heavy-duty brush bumper. This truck was our go-where-no-man-has-gone-before truck.

We liked the 36x12.50x16.5 tires. They're all the vogue in this neck of the woods. When we retired this truck, we installed the tires on 501.

This truck was retired in December 1999. We replaced it with 502.
