601 is a 1963 Ford 600. As the people where it came from refered to it as a "Cascade", I think was originally set up as a support unit. It contains a cascade system, a lot of storage for air bottles, and is wired for 110 volts, although we didn't get the generator with the truck.
601 arrived at Silver City America from New Gretna, NJ on Saturday, October 26, 2002. At the time it arrived, it was chock full of serviceable used equipment donated by several fire departments in the area from which it came. Ken Christensen, our guy on the spot over there, provided me with a list of who gave what, and the credits appear elsewhere on this web site.
photo by Bryan Beall, October 26, 2002 It's a cute little thing, isn't it? It's only 18 feet long and has a short wheelbase, which we figure will be a big advantage in the maneuverability area.
photo by Bryan Beall, October 26, 2002 We're going to call 601 a "Rescue". Maybe "Rescue Jr." would be more appropriate. Our intention is to set this truck up as a combination unit for medical First Responder, light rescue, and support. We'll put EMS supplies on one side, rescue equipment on the other, and probably put a generator back in it and rig it up with area lighting. If we can figure out a way to put an air conditioner on it, we may also use it for rehab.
More on this truck later as it progresses. We probably won't have it in service until well into 2003.
UPDATE, OCTOBER 5, 2003 - We finished painting yesterday, and ripped off the masking tape today.
